  • Very first run (new here), export fbx from daz, import to Cascadeur, crash.

Let's assume for the sake of argument there's some extremely important nugget of information I have not acquired in the ten minutes since I was first told about Cascadeur, installed it and ran it (it's possible, you have to agree). My broad question is this: can I import Daz 3d Genesis 3 models into Cascadeur via FBX and if so, how do I do it?

Yes, you can import FBX - https://cascadeur.com/help/category/75

In that case the repo is:

      Daz:

Blank scene in Daz 3D (4.12 Pro)
Add Genesis 3 Female base character
File -> Export -> (choose filename and select FBX)
      [FBX 2014 -- Binary
      Check Figures,
      Check Embed Textures,
      Check Allow Degraded Skinning,
      Check Allow Degraded Scaling,
      Check SubD Information]

      Cascadeur:

      Import Fbx/Dae
      Select exported .fbx
      Click open

Cascadeur crashes, disppearing from Task Manager (no exception message, just gone).

Edit: it doesn't like Daz Genesis 2 either.

how many bones does your model have? If it's more than 128 bones per mesh, it could be the cause of problem.

Ah, that explains it. Daz characters have rigged jaw/mouth parts, which pretty much doubles the number of bones up beyond 128. I think G8 is 170 or so. G3 will be the same and G2 I'm not sure about. Anyway the point is in order to use Cascadeur, one would have to remove these (they don't need to be simulated) before import and then merge the animation back in after export. Thanks, I'll experiment with this.

Btw, you can also split the mesh into a few meshes, if you don't want to remove the bones.
